Scouting basics
What does a boxing scout look for first?
Balance, defensive habits and composure under pressure. Power and speed are easier to build than temperament. See Methods.
Is an amateur record reliable?
Only with context on opposition and tournament level. A padded record can mislead; see Records.
How do I start scouting?
Attend local club shows, keep one dated sheet per viewing, and rewatch on video. Build a season plan as described in The Circuit.
Rules and scoring
How are elite amateur bouts scored?
With the 10-point must system and five judges, rewarding clean scoring punches, competitiveness and control of the bout.
How long is an elite amateur bout?
Three rounds of three minutes. Junior and youth formats can be shorter.
Who governs Olympic boxing?
World Boxing, founded in 2023, organises the Olympic-style international pathway. National bodies such as England Boxing and USA Boxing run domestic competition.
Welfare and ethics
Can I contact a junior boxer directly?
No. Go through the head coach and include a parent or guardian. Never message minors on social media. See Welfare.
Is video enough to rate a boxer?
Video is excellent for detail but misses atmosphere and corner interaction. Pair it with live viewing.
Do I need a licence to scout?
Watching is open to anyone. Managing or representing boxers may require a licence depending on where you work; check with the relevant boxing authority.
Does this board recommend boxers or agents?
No. We publish general information only and do not broker introductions.
